Oakland, California (March 25, 2026) — A 59-year-old man remains in critical condition after being struck in a hit-and-run crash in Oakland, according to authorities and family members.
The victim was identified as Anthony Pinelli, of Concord.
The incident occurred just before 6:00 p.m. near 23rd Street and Broadway in Uptown Oakland.
Incident Details: According to reports, Pinelli had just finished a graffiti cleanup job and was crossing the street when he was struck by a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed. Surveillance footage captures a car speeding along the road shortly before Pinelli was discovered lying still in the street. Bystanders quickly moved to help him before emergency responders arrived.
Pinelli sustained catastrophic injuries, including a traumatic brain injury, fractured skull, severe spinal trauma, and multiple additional injuries. He was transported to a hospital, where he remains in the intensive care unit, unresponsive, and has undergone multiple surgeries.
Authorities later determined the vehicle involved had been reported stolen, and the driver fled the scene, abandoning the car shortly afterward.
Investigators have not yet identified or arrested the driver.
Investigation: The Oakland Police Department is actively investigating the hit-and-run. In cases involving high-speed urban collisions, investigators typically examine vehicle speed, roadway conditions, and driver behavior, particularly in areas known for heavy traffic or frequent speeding.
Crash reconstruction may include analysis of surveillance footage, impact location, and physical evidence, along with efforts to trace the stolen vehicle and identify the driver. Because the vehicle was reported stolen, investigators may also examine who had possession of it at the time of the crash and whether any additional criminal conduct is involved.
The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not released a suspect description.
Legal Considerations: Hit-and-run crashes involving serious injuries often carry significant criminal and civil implications, particularly when the driver flees the scene. Even if the driver at fault cannot be immediately identified, recovery of damages may still be achievable through uninsured motorist coverage or other available insurance options, depending on the specifics of the situation.
These cases often require a thorough investigation to identify all potential sources of liability and financial recovery.
From a civil perspective, if the driver is identified, Pinelli might be able to file a personal injury claim. This could cover medical costs, future care requirements, lost earnings, and pain and suffering, particularly considering the seriousness of his injuries and the potential for lasting effects.
I wish strength and healing for Anthony Pinelli and his family during this very challenging time.
