Alexander Charmoli, 18, Dies After Motorcycle Collision on I-805 in University City

San Diego, California  (March 19, 2026) — An 18-year-old motorcyclist from Arizona died after a collision with a vehicle on Interstate 805 in the University City area, according to authorities.

The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as Alexander Charmoli, of Apache Junction, Arizona.

The crash occurred at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Interstate 805 near Eastgate Mall.

Incident Details: According to officials, Charmoli was riding a motorcycle southbound on I-805 when he was involved in a collision with a passenger vehicle.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene and provided medical assistance before transporting Charmoli to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla.

Despite those efforts, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival due to injuries sustained in the crash.

Authorities have not released additional details about the other vehicle involved, including the driver’s identity or whether the driver was injured.

Investigation: The circumstances surrounding the collision remain under investigation by local authorities. In motorcycle-versus-vehicle crashes on freeways, investigators typically examine lane positioning, speed, merging activity, and driver awareness. Determining whether either vehicle made an unsafe lane change or failed to properly observe surrounding traffic is often central to understanding how the crash occurred.

Crash reconstruction may include analysis of vehicle damage, roadway evidence, and any available traffic camera footage. Investigators may also evaluate whether traffic conditions or sudden braking contributed to the collision. Because motorcycles are less visible than passenger vehicles, investigators often consider whether the driver of the other vehicle had a reasonable opportunity to perceive and react to the motorcyclist before the impact.

At this time, officials have not announced any citations or charges. The investigation remains ongoing.

Legal Considerations: Motorcycle crashes on high-speed roadways often involve complex liability questions regarding right-of-way, lane changes, and driver attentiveness.

Under California law, all drivers have a duty to operate their vehicles safely and remain aware of surrounding traffic, including motorcyclists. These cases often hinge on whether a driver failed to yield, maintain a proper lookout, or execute a maneuver safely.

Pending the investigation’s outcome, the Charmoli family may have the right to file a wrongful death claim to seek recovery for their substantial emotional and financial losses due to the incident. This could include compensation for funeral and burial expenses, as well as the loss of Alexander’s financial support and companionship.

Beyond the legal considerations, this tragedy reflects the heightened risks motorcyclists face on busy freeway systems.

I extend my deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Alexander Charmoli during this difficult time.
