Glenn County, CA (July 29, 2024) – A tragic accident on Interstate 5 southbound in Glenn County resulted in the death of 25-year-old Alejandro Bernal-Lozano from Red Bluff.
Accident Details: The collision occurred around 11:30 p.m. south of County Road 39. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), Bernal-Lozano was walking within the freeway’s fast lane when he was struck by a Volkswagen driven by 28-year-old Jamey Phillips from Willows. After the initial impact, a Honda driven by Vignesh Pandiarajan and a Peterbilt truck driven by Maricela Sanchez also collided with the pedestrian. Despite immediate medical attention, Bernal-Lozano tragically succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Legal Considerations: As a personal injury attorney, I find that several aspects of this case warrant further examination. The CHP has indicated that the drivers are not suspected to be impaired by drugs and alcohol. However, examining the behavior and attentiveness of all drivers involved remains crucial. This examination includes reviewing whether Phillips, Pandiarajan, or Sanchez were operating their vehicles within the confines of the law and paying proper attention to the road.
Although Alejandro Bernal-Lozano’s impairment is currently unknown, an investigation into his actions leading up to the accident is necessary. This could involve assessing whether he was visible to drivers and if he was crossing the freeway in a manner that complied with any applicable laws or safety regulations.
Investigators will also investigate if there were any road defects or signage deficiencies that may have contributed to the crash. Any negligence might implicate the local municipality.
If negligence is found, Bernal-Lozano’s family may be able to file a wrongful death claim and recover compensation for their loss, such as funeral and burial expenses.
My sincerest condolences go to the family and friends of Alejandro Bernal-Lozano during this heartbreaking time.
