A’Kiya Mills Killed in Crash with Semi-Truck Near U.S. 49/U.S. 98 Interchange in Hattiesburg

Hattiesburg, MS (April 19, 2025) – A 19-year-old woman from Greene County was killed Saturday evening in a two-vehicle crash involving a semi-trailer truck near the interchange of U.S. 49 and U.S. 98, according to the Hattiesburg Police Department.

Accident Details: The crash occurred around 5:10 p.m. in the 4800 block of U.S. 49. Authorities say a passenger vehicle collided with a semi-trailer truck in the southbound lanes. The driver of the passenger vehicle, identified as A’Kiya Mills of McLain, Mississippi, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Forrest County Coroner’s Office.

The southbound lanes of U.S. 49 were closed for several hours as emergency crews responded and cleared the roadway. Drivers were advised to avoid the area and anticipate delays.

Legal Considerations: Fatal collisions involving commercial trucks often lead to investigations into speed, visibility, traffic patterns, and driver attentiveness. Depending on the outcome of the investigation, if the semi-truck driver is found to have acted negligently, A’Kiya Mills’ family may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim.

Authorities will likely examine crash scene evidence, vehicle data, and possible surveillance footage to determine liability.

Ongoing Investigation: The Hattiesburg Police Department is actively investigating the cause of the crash. No further details have been released regarding potential citations, charges, or contributing factors.

I offer my heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of A’Kiya Mills during this tragic time.
