Burlington Township, MI (April 8, 2025) — A serious crash involving a disabled semi-truck early Tuesday morning has left a 79-year-old man hospitalized with significant injuries, according to the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office.
Incident Details: The collision happened at approximately 5:39 a.m. on 11 Mile Road close to Q Drive South in Burlington Township. A semi-truck that was experiencing mechanical issues became disabled and blocked both lanes of 11 Mile Road. The elderly driver, a resident of Three Rivers, was traveling northbound when his vehicle struck the stationary truck.
Emergency crews from Burlington and Union City Fire Departments responded swiftly. The driver was pinned in his vehicle and had to be extricated before being transported to a local hospital with serious injuries. The semi-truck driver was not injured.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: The Calhoun County Accident Reconstruction Team, alongside the Michigan State Police, is actively investigating the crash. Authorities will likely assess whether the semi-truck operator followed state regulations for securing a disabled vehicle in an active roadway (e.g., hazard lights, warning triangles), the timeline and nature of the mechanical failure, visibility conditions, and whether sufficient precautions were taken to warn oncoming traffic.
Based on the investigation’s findings, the injured man may have the opportunity to file a personal injury claim against either the driver or the trucking company. These claims compensate for lost income, medical expenses, and the pain and suffering experienced by the injured party.
My thoughts are with the injured driver and his family as he recovers.
