Merced County, CA (March 3, 2025) – A tragic pedestrian accident on Monday afternoon claimed the life of a 75-year-old woman who was struck while using a crosswalk in Delhi.
Accident Details: According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the crash occurred just before 2 p.m. near Shanks Road and Lewis Circle. The 75-year-old victim was walking in a marked crosswalk when she was hit by a vehicle. Emergency crews rushed her to a local hospital, but she tragically died en route. The driver, a 77-year-old individual, remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. Drugs and alcohol were not factors in the crash, according to CHP.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: Drivers have a legal duty to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, and failing to do so can lead to serious or fatal consequences. Investigators will determine whether the driver saw or should have seen the pedestrian in time to stop. Was the driver distracted by a phone, radio, or other factors? Did the driver apply the brakes or attempt to avoid the collision? Investigators will also examine traffic footage and video surveillance and review witness statements to determine what happened and how fast the vehicle was traveling at the time of the collision.
If negligence is found, the victim’s family may have grounds to file a wrongful death claim for funeral costs, loss of financial support, and emotional losses.
I extend my condolences to the family and loved ones of the victim.
