Adam Joe Ferguson Killed, Another Injured in Three-Truck Crash on U.S. 285 in Reeves County

Reeves County, TX (April 20, 2025) – A collision involving three 18-wheelers on U.S. Highway 285 in Reeves County Sunday morning left one man dead and another injured, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).

Accident Details: The crash happened around 9:45 a.m. DPS reports that a Kenworth semi-truck traveling northbound suffered a defective front left tire, causing the driver, 26-year-old Adam Joe Ferguson of Canute, Oklahoma, to lose control and veer into oncoming traffic.

Ferguson’s semi-truck collided head-on with a Freightliner towing a trailer traveling southbound. After the initial impact, Ferguson’s truck continued forward and sideswiped another Kenworth semi-truck that had been following the Freightliner.

Ferguson was pronounced dead at the scene despite wearing his seatbelt. The driver of the Freightliner, 41-year-old Uriel Primitivo Vazquez of Odessa, sustained minor injuries and was taken to Reeves Regional Hospital. The third driver, 29-year-old Gustavo Otero-Valladares of Chihuahua, Mexico, was unharmed.

Legal Considerations: When crashes involve mechanical failures such as a tire blowout, investigators will assess whether proper maintenance was conducted on the truck. If it’s determined that tire defects or lack of maintenance played a role, liability could extend to the trucking company or tire manufacturer.

Ferguson’s family may have grounds to pursue claims related to wrongful death if a mechanical defect or maintenance oversight contributed to the crash.

Ongoing Investigation: The Texas Highway Patrol is leading the investigation. No additional details regarding potential citations or further findings have been released as of Monday morning.

I extend my condolences to the family and loved ones of Adam Joe Ferguson and hope for the quick recovery of Uriel Primitivo Vazquez.
