Fremont, CA (December 13, 2025) – An Alameda County coroner identified Abraham Fadel EL-Zein, 39, as the pedestrian who was killed by a car while he was walking on the sidewalk in Fremont.
Incident Details: The incident occurred around 4 p.m. on December 13 when Fremont Police Department (FPD) officers observed a driver speeding and driving recklessly on Osgood Road, south of Auto Mall Parkway. The driver was identified as Antwone Spruill, 28, of Fremont.
After observing Spruill driving recklessly, the FPD initiated a stop by activating their patrol vehicle’s emergency lights. Spruill fled from the scene and did not stop. As Spruill was evading the officers, he ran a red light at Osgood Road and South Grimmer Boulevard. He crashed his car into another vehicle, continued out of control, and crossed onto a sidewalk. Investigators reported that while he was driving on the sidewalk, Spruill struck a pedestrian, Fadel EL-Zein.
Fadel EL-Zein was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Spruill was taken into custody following the fatal incident. Investigators are awaiting a toxicology report to determine if drugs or alcohol contributed to the crash.
Investigation: The Fremont Police Department is continuing to investigate the fatal pedestrian crash that occurred on Osgood Road following a high-speed pursuit. Investigators will examine the sequence of events beginning with officers’ initial observations of reckless driving, the attempted traffic stop, and Spruill’s decision to flee.
Authorities will analyze physical evidence from the scene, including vehicle damage, debris patterns, skid marks, and the path the vehicle traveled from the roadway onto the sidewalk.
Investigators are also expected to review patrol vehicle dash camera footage, traffic camera recordings, and witness statements to establish speed, signal status at the intersection, and the timeline of the pursuit.
The pending toxicology report will be evaluated to determine whether drugs or alcohol contributed to the driver’s conduct. These findings will be used to fully reconstruct the crash and assess all contributing factors and liability.
Legal Considerations: Pedestrians have the right to use sidewalks safely. Drivers who operate vehicles recklessly, particularly while fleeing from police, face serious criminal and civil consequences under California law.
If the investigation confirms that Spruill’s reckless driving and evasion directly caused the death of Abraham Fadel EL-Zein, he may face severe criminal penalties, including charges related to vehicular manslaughter or homicide.
From a civil perspective, Fadel EL-Zein’s family may have grounds for a wrongful death claim. A claim can help the family seek compensation for medical expenses, funeral and burial costs, loss of financial support, and the profound loss of companionship and care. Even in cases involving criminal prosecution, civil claims can provide families with a path toward accountability and financial stability.
My deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of Abraham Fadel EL-Zein as they mourn this tragic loss.
