Ventura, CA (March 15, 2025) – A 76-year-old woman who was struck by a pickup truck while crossing the street on Saturday, March 15, 2025, has died from her injuries, according to the Ventura Police Department.
Accident Details: The incident occurred at Chestnut Street and Thompson Boulevard around 12:15 p.m. Authorities say the pickup truck driver, a 33-year-old man, was waiting at a red light on Chestnut Street. When the light was green, he turned left onto Thompson Boulevard and struck the woman in the crosswalk. The woman had been standing on the southeast corner and had begun walking across Thompson Boulevard when the crash occurred.
The driver remained at the scene and has not been arrested. Ventura police say their traffic unit is still investigating to determine who was at fault and whether the driver may be liable. The Ventura Police Department learned Sunday afternoon that the 76-year-old pedestrian had succumbed to her injuries at the hospital.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: Drivers should be wary of pedestrians even if they have a green light. Left turns are hazardous because drivers must check for oncoming traffic and pedestrians simultaneously, increasing the risk of missing someone in the crosswalk. Investigators will assess whether the driver failed to properly check for pedestrians before making his turn.
Investigators will analyze factors such as driver speed, visibility, and potential distraction to determine whether negligence played a role. Authorities will also examine traffic camera footage, witness statements, and accident reconstruction data to determine when the pedestrian entered the crosswalk and whether the driver had sufficient time to stop. Additionally, police may investigate whether the driver was distracted or failed to conduct a proper safety check before turning.
If investigators determine that negligence contributed to the crash, the victim’s family may have grounds to file a wrongful death claim to seek compensation.
My sincerest condolences are with the family and friends of the deceased pedestrian during this difficult time.
