22-Year-Old Motorcyclist Killed, Passenger Injured in La Mesa Collision with SUV

La Mesa, CA (May 12, 2025) — A 22-year-old man from El Cajon was killed and his 20-year-old passenger seriously injured Sunday night in a head-on crash involving a motorcycle and an SUV in East La Mesa near Mount Helix, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

Incident Details: The crash occurred around 8:00 p.m. on May 11 as the motorcyclist and his passenger were traveling northbound on Avocado Boulevard on a 2017 Ducati motorcycle. A southbound 2019 Ford Explorer, driven by a 40-year-old La Mesa man, attempted to make a left turn onto Explorer Road, crossing directly into the path of the oncoming motorcycle. The motorcycle collided head-on with the SUV, ejecting both riders.

The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene, while his passenger was transported to Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego with serious injuries. The SUV driver sustained minor injuries, according to CHP Officer Jasmine Lopez.

Investigation and Legal Considerations: The California Highway Patrol continues investigating the crash to determine whether failure to yield, driver distraction, or improper left turn contributed to the fatal collision.

Depending on the findings of the investigation, the family of the deceased rider may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim, while the injured passenger could file a personal injury lawsuit to seek compensation for medical expenses, long-term care, and emotional trauma.

I extend my deepest condolences to the family of the young man who lost his life, and hope for a full recovery for his passenger.
