Encinitas, CA (May 2, 2025) – A tragic crash in Encinitas Friday evening claimed the life of a 12-year-old girl who was struck while crossing the street in a marked crosswalk.
Accident Details: According to the North Coastal Sheriff’s Station, the incident occurred around 6:51 p.m. at the intersection of Encinitas Boulevard and Village Square Drive. The girl was walking in the crosswalk when she was hit by an SUV that had just collided with another car at the intersection. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have not released her name. Both drivers remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Neither driver was reported to be injured, and early reports indicate that alcohol and drugs are not suspected as factors.
The North Coastal Station Traffic Investigators and the Sheriff’s Traffic Accident Reconstruction Team are investigating the cause of the crash. Officials are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or has video footage to contact the Sheriff’s Department.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: When a pedestrian is killed in a traffic collision, it’s essential to understand how the crash happened and whether it could have been prevented. Investigators will likely examine how the initial vehicle collision occurred, including reviewing witness statements and analyzing the crash site.
Because the facts indicate the girl was in the crosswalk, investigators should also focus on whether the driver exercised reasonable care in checking for pedestrians or if inattention or distraction contributed to a failure to yield. The role of the car the SUV crashed into should also be considered.
Depending on what the investigation reveals, the child’s family may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim.
I extend my deepest condolences to the child’s family and community during this challenging time.
