1 Killed, 6 Injured in Manhattan Crash at Route 50 and County Line Road

MANHATTAN, IL (October 20, 2025) — A devastating crash involving a passenger van and a semi-truck left two people dead and five others injured on Friday evening near the intersection of Route 50 and County Line Road, according to the Manhattan Fire Protection District.

Accident Details: Emergency units were dispatched at approximately 7:35 p.m. after reports of a serious collision with multiple people trapped inside a van. When firefighters arrived within six minutes, they discovered extensive damage to both vehicles and several victims unable to exit the passenger van. A full extrication assignment was requested immediately, prompting additional support from nearby departments in Monee, Frankfort, Manteno, and University Park.

Fire crews successfully removed the victims from the wreckage. Seven individuals were involved in the crash: two in critical condition, three with moderate injuries, one with minor injuries, and one deceased at the scene. One of the critically injured victims was later pronounced dead at the hospital. A child was airlifted to Comer Children’s Hospital for specialized care.

Authorities have not released the names of the deceased or the condition of the remaining victims. The semi-truck driver did not require medical transport, and no other vehicles were reportedly involved.

Investigation: Illinois State Police took over the investigation and worked through the night to examine the scene. The exact cause of the crash has not been confirmed. Crews remained on site for several hours to support law enforcement with safety operations and vehicle removal.

Local officials have noted that this intersection has seen multiple serious crashes in recent years. Discussions are ongoing regarding infrastructure improvements to address safety concerns in the area. No citations or charges have been announced at this time.

Legal Considerations: When a van carrying multiple people is struck by a commercial vehicle, the question of responsibility depends on a range of contributing factors. These may include whether the truck driver was following traffic laws, whether weather or road conditions were involved, or if the van’s occupants were properly secured.

Families affected by this crash may consider their options for recovery, including potential claims for hospital bills, long-term care, funeral costs, and loss of income. In situations with multiple victims, insurance policies and liability limits may also become a concern. The involvement of multiple emergency response agencies and the extent of the injuries suggest a detailed investigation will be required.

We extend our thoughts to everyone affected by this tragedy and hope for healing for those who remain hospitalized.
